Greenwich High shut out Newtown 24-0 on Homecoming Day, Saturday, Oct. 3, at Cardinal Stadium.

The two-time defending CIAC Class LL champions improved to 4-0 with their third shutout in four games. MaxPreps lists the Cardinals with 118 points scored and just seven allowed through four weeks.

Senior captain Justin Carroll powered the offense, rushing for 96 yards and all three Greenwich touchdowns on eight carries, Greenwich Sports Beat reported. Junior quarterback Phil Tarantino completed 14 of 25 passes for 102 yards. Sophomore running back Evan Beilenson added 41 yards on 10 carries.

The defense was dominant. Greenwich recorded eight sacks, forced three turnovers and held Newtown to 28 rushing yards. Senior defensive lineman Anthony Cebanos led the pass rush with 3.5 sacks, and senior Joshua Alexandre added 2.5. Senior defensive back Luke Wells intercepted two passes.

"The defense has played at that level of excellence this year," head coach Anthony Morello told Greenwich Sports Beat after the game.

Greenwich committed four turnovers of its own, including lost fumbles on its first two possessions. The offense recovered in the second quarter, scoring 14 points before halftime. Carroll's eight-yard touchdown run with 8:47 left in the fourth quarter capped the scoring. Kicker Michael Galano connected on a 39-yard field goal earlier in the period.

Senior captain Casey Baker, the team's center, said the offense needs to catch up to the level the defense has established through three shutouts.
