A 116-year-old home on one of Greenwich's most prestigious backcountry roads could be torn down as early as mid-September after a new LLC filed for a demolition permit.

577 Round Hill Road LLC submitted the application to the Department of Public Works Division of Buildings on July 31, Greenwich Free Press reported. The mandatory 45-day waiting period began Aug. 1 and closes Sept. 15, making Sept. 16 the first date the permit can be issued.

The home dates to 1910.

The four-bedroom, six-bathroom house spans 8,188 square feet on 6.58 acres, according to public real estate records. The property was once part of the Wilshire Farms estate, a 200-plus-acre spread along Round Hill Road. A gated quarter-mile driveway framed by white split-rail fencing leads to the house, which the property's listing described as a 1910 carriage house. The grounds also include three-stall stables, a four-bedroom guest cottage, a detached three-car garage, a pool with cabana and a tennis court.

Greenwich Assessor's office records show the property sold from Vincent C Travagliato to 577 Round Hill Road LLC on Jan. 22 for $7.5 million. Listing agent Joseph Barbieri of Sotheby's International Realty had marketed the estate at $7.9 million.

Residents can extend the waiting period

Because the house predates 1940, Greenwich's demolition delay ordinance gives residents a tool to slow the process. A written letter of objection submitted to the DPW Building Division before Sept. 15 doubles the waiting period from 45 to 90 days.

Greenwich is a Certified Local Government with a Local Historic District, according to Preservation Connecticut, which tracks demolition delay policies statewide.

Under the ordinance and Connecticut General Statute 29-406(c), the applicant cannot take any action toward demolition during the waiting period, according to the town's demolition guidelines. That includes site remediation and asbestos abatement. The town is also required to notify the Greenwich Historical Society and the Historic District Commission of the application.

No public statement has been made by 577 Round Hill Road LLC regarding plans for the site after demolition.
