Crews aim to finish tearing down the old Central Middle School building in October. The demolition is the next major step in a two-phase, 21-acre campus overhaul whose new building opened to students on Aug. 27.

Greenwich Public Schools released its October construction update, as reported by Patch. The district plans to reach "substantial completion" of the old building's demolition and removal during October, then begin preparing the ground beneath new athletic fields.

Families driving near the campus should note that the road closure between Indian Rock Lane and Stanwich Road has been extended through Friday, Oct. 30. The closure runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., according to the district's September construction bulletin.

Since students and staff moved in, September work included maintaining Phase 1 plantings, advancing demolition of the old structure, continuing construction of a new fire pump house and making progress on a Phase 2 parent drop-off loop off Indian Rock Lane.

What's planned for October

The district's October checklist goes beyond demolition. Crews also plan to:

  • Complete tree plantings across Phase 1 of the campus
  • Finalize and hand over the new parent drop-off area
  • Continue building the fire pump house

The September bulletin adds two more end-of-October targets: finishing the Indian Rock Lane sewer relocation and completing the new parent drop-off loop.

Once demolition wraps and rock is cleared, athletic field construction is scheduled to begin. The district's bulletin puts field completion at the end of November.

Safety and access

The campus remains an active construction site. Public access is prohibited outside school hours, the district said. Families with safety concerns can contact Turner Construction Project Manager Joseph Phelan at (203) 410-0874 or Project Superintendent Chris Chila at (860) 634-7216.

The district's next target is completing demolition on schedule so athletic field construction can begin before winter.
