Drivers heading to Greenwich Point will hit alternating one-way traffic on Shore Road starting Tuesday, Oct. 13, when crews begin building a new sidewalk in Old Greenwich.

The project stretches from the intersection of Sound Beach Avenue and Shore Road southwest to Shore Road and South Crossway, according to the Town of Greenwich Department of Public Works. Work will run Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the road restored to a drivable condition at the end of each day.

Shore Road carries about 2,250 vehicles daily and has several school bus stops.

During the first phase, contractors will saw-cut the pavement to prepare for excavation of portions of the roadway and the adjacent right-of-way. As work progresses, "there will be periods when alternating one-way traffic will be necessary," Ian Brown, Civil Engineer II in the DPW Engineering Division and the project manager, told Patch. Police officers will be stationed on-site to direct traffic during those stretches.

The DPW has not published a timeline for when one-way traffic periods will begin or how long each closure will last. Residents who use Shore Road for school drop-offs or commutes to Greenwich Point should expect delays once excavation is underway.

The project extends a sidewalk network that grew in 2023, when the town built a new sidewalk along the east side of Shore Road from Tomac Avenue to Sound Beach Avenue. The new segment picks up where that earlier project ended and continues southwest toward Greenwich Point.

According to the DPW's project page, the sidewalk project grew out of community interest and was identified as a pedestrian safety improvement by multiple studies. The town held a public information meeting on March 25, 2025, at which DPW staff confirmed the sidewalk was feasible.

The DPW's project page lists a target completion by the end of 2026, though the schedule depends on weather and other conditions. No project cost has been published on the town's website.

No follow-up public meeting has been announced. Residents looking for updates can check the town's project page or contact Brown at (203) 622-7860.
