Nighttime lane closures on I-95 through Greenwich began Monday, Oct. 26, as the Connecticut Department of Transportation starts a six-week catch basin cleaning project stretching from New Haven to Greenwich.
Lanes will close on I-95 northbound and southbound from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday nights through Friday mornings, according to a CT DOT construction advisory. The work is scheduled to wrap up by Friday, Dec. 4.
The project covers 12 towns: New Haven, West Haven, Orange, Milford, Stratford, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Westport, Norwalk, Darien, Stamford and Greenwich. Crews from contractor Latec LLC and state forces will clean catch basins on highway bridges, the advisory said. Catch basins are underground drainage boxes that collect stormwater runoff and debris before it enters the sewer system.
Some earlier reports described the closures as daytime work. CT Insider reported Oct. 20 on the project and later published a correction noting an updated work schedule from DOT. The department's own advisory specifies nighttime-only closures.
Drivers on I-95 between New Haven and Greenwich should expect delays and may see new traffic signage in work zones, WTNH reported. Traffic control signs and crash units will guide motorists through the construction areas, according to the advisory.
No work will take place around state holidays. CT DOT cautioned that weather or other conditions could extend the schedule beyond Dec. 4.
