Greenwich Police arrested a Flushing, N.Y., man on six charges after officers caught him allegedly using iPhones loaded with suspected fraudulent funds to buy electronics on Greenwich Avenue.
Deng Li, 31, was taken into custody on Thursday, Oct. 15, after officers from the Organized Retail Crime and Fraud Unit (ORCA) spotted what they called indicators of financial fraud near Greenwich Avenue around 1 p.m., according to Greenwich Free Press.
Police said Li was using an older model iPhone containing an iCloud account loaded with suspected fraudulent funds to purchase high-value electronic merchandise at a local business. Police also said the investigation indicated Li was working with other individuals to carry out the purchases.
A search of Li's vehicle turned up nine older model iPhones, 17 FedEx shipping receipts and six new iPhone 18 Pros, police said. Receipts for the new iPhones showed numerous different accounts had been used to make the purchases.
Li was charged with third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny, third-degree identity theft, conspiracy to commit third-degree identity theft, criminal impersonation and conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation. His bond was set at $250,000. He was assigned a court date at Stamford Superior Court on Friday, Oct. 16.
ORCA is a plainclothes detail that has operated within the Greenwich Police Department since 2020, according to the department's website. The unit targets larceny, fraud and identity theft in Greenwich's Central Business District. Officers regularly work with local business owners on fraud detection and share intelligence with federal law enforcement, the NYPD and agencies across the tri-state area.
The arrest adds to a busy stretch for the unit. As we reported Oct. 16, ORCA officers recently arrested an Oxford man on six felony charges in a separate fraud case involving a compromised bank account. ORCA Officers Jack Livingston and Alex DeLuca were named Officers of the Month after making 17 arrests in July alone, according to a GPD announcement. The two officers have made a combined 117 arrests so far this year.
