Greenwich High's unbeaten football team faces its biggest test of the season Friday when No. 1 New Canaan visits Cardinal Stadium at 7 p.m.

Both teams enter at 5-0 in what GametimeCT called the 10th meeting between the poll's top two teams since 2005. The Cardinals sit at No. 2, tied with St. Joseph, while the Rams have held the top spot since the end of the 2024 season.

The matchup pits arguably the state's two best defenses against each other. Greenwich has allowed just 13 points through five games with three shutouts. New Canaan has surrendered 14 points with four shutouts.

The Cardinals come off a bye week after dismantling Norwalk 49-6 on Oct. 10. Junior quarterback Phil Tarantino completed 10 of 12 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns in that game and added a rushing score, according to the Greenwich Sentinel. Seven different receivers caught passes.

Senior linebacker and running back Justin Carroll anchors both sides of the ball. He has 56 tackles, 33 solo, four tackles for loss and two sacks this season, according to GametimeCT's midseason report. On offense, Carroll has rushed 25 times for 204 yards and six touchdowns.

Greenwich's defense held just two returning starters entering the season, Carroll and free safety Colin Suvansri, yet has yielded the fewest points in the state.

New Canaan brings a 28-game winning streak and is chasing a fifth consecutive CIAC Class L championship. Head coach Lou Marinelli is in his 45th season leading the Rams and entered 2026 one win shy of 400 career victories at New Canaan.

Senior quarterback Maddox Hoffman, in his second year as starter, threw for 2,030 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. Senior linebacker Jack Crowell, the program's all-time leader in solo tackles, has 41 tackles this season. Senior offensive tackles Connor Furman and Henry Reagan anchor the line.

The Rams hold a 22-16-3 edge in the all-time series and have won the last two meetings, both by 14-7 scores, according to GametimeCT. Greenwich last beat New Canaan 35-0 in the 2018 CIAC Class LL final.

In coverage published Oct. 21, Greenwich senior wide receiver Bobby Stanley told the Sentinel about the New Canaan game, "I'm very, very excited, we're going to work very hard and hopefully, we can get that win."

Both teams face loaded second-half schedules. Greenwich follows with Ridgefield, Wilton, St. Joseph and Staples. New Canaan has No. 6 Ludlowe, St. Joseph, Wilton and Darien ahead. Kickoff is Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
