Central Middle School families will have a new face in the front office when the 2026-27 school year begins. Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones appointed Shawn Hoyt as assistant principal, effective Monday, July 13.
Hoyt, a 10-year Greenwich Public Schools (GPS) veteran, replaces Scott Trungadi, who held the role for 11 years before his promotion to the district's educational data and systems program coordinator position, also effective July 13.
As Greenwich High School's science program administrator since 2023, Hoyt focused on Next Generation Science Standards inquiry and lab-based learning. Jones said in the district's announcement that he led the school to its highest scores on NGSS-aligned assessments in its history.
"Mr. Hoyt is also considered one of the district's most technically proficient leaders and can step in and fill the void left by Mr. Trungadi," Jones said.
Hoyt joined GPS in 2016 as a biology and chemistry teacher at Greenwich High School. He previously taught biology, anatomy, and physiology at Tolland High School starting in 2014. He holds a bachelor's degree in sports biology from Springfield College, a master's in human nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, and an educational leadership certification from Sacred Heart University.
During the 2025-26 school year, Hoyt served as interim assistant principal at Western Middle School to cover a leave vacancy. In that role, he supported the school's special education program and worked directly with students, teachers, and families.
Principal Tom Healy said the school community will miss Trungadi but welcomed the hire. Healy said Hoyt brings knowledge and skill that will benefit students "over this critical three year period" that students spend in middle school.
Trungadi's departure leaves a gap in several operational areas at Central Middle School. He served as the administration designee for Planning and Placement Teams, the site test coordinator for standardized assessments, led social-emotional learning initiatives, and built the master schedule as the school's Aspen administrator.
The next Board of Education meeting open to public comment is Thursday, September 24; the district's BoardDocs page lists any earlier dates.
