Greenwich state Sen. Ryan Fazio and Gov. Ned Lamont face off Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Mohegan Sun in a televised gubernatorial debate one week before Election Day.
The hour-long debate airs live from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on WTNH News 8, according to the station's preview. It will also stream on WTNH.com and the free WTNH News 8 app, available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and select Samsung smart TVs. A pre-debate show streams from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the same platforms.
WTNH chief political anchor Dennis House and anchor Kathryn Hauser will moderate. Joe DeLong, CEO and executive director of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM), which co-hosts the event with WTNH, will serve as a panelist. AARP Connecticut is the debate sponsor.
The matchup follows an Oct. 22 debate on WFSB, which we covered Friday. Lamont, a Democrat seeking a third term, faces Fazio, a Republican who represents Greenwich in the state Senate, with the Nov. 3 general election eight days away.
An Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey of 800 likely voters published Oct. 15 found Lamont leading 51% to 38%, with 11% undecided. The poll was the third academic survey in recent weeks to show the governor with a double-digit lead, WTNH reported.
Fazio has acknowledged the gap. After casting his ballot early at Greenwich Town Hall on Oct. 19, he told WTNH, "We're the underdog. There's no doubt about it."
The economy dominated voter concerns in the Emerson poll, with 48% naming the economy, taxes or jobs as their top issue. No other concern topped 10%.
At a Connecticut Business and Industry Association conference in September, the candidates offered competing economic visions. Fazio said he hears from people "every single day, all across the state" who are "struggling to make ends meet," according to WTNH's coverage of the event. Lamont pointed to eight consecutive balanced budgets and a growing population as signs of progress.
Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo endorsed Fazio in a letter published Oct. 24 by Greenwich Free Press, writing that he has known the senator since Fazio played youth baseball in town.
Early voting continues at Greenwich Town Hall through Nov. 1. The polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 27, the same night as the debate.
