First Selectman Fred Camillo proclaimed Tuesday, Nov. 3, as Empy and Gloria Jaramillo Day in Greenwich, honoring the sisters who built a Cos Cob nail salon into a 40-year local institution.
The proclamation recognizes the Jaramillo sisters as immigrants from Colombia who arrived in the United States in 1982. They are two of 18 children, according to the proclamation.
On Nov. 3, 1986, the sisters opened Nails by Empy at 3 Field Road in Cos Cob. The proclamation states their dedication drove them to build a loyal customer base, and they used the salon's success to help their family back in Colombia.
In 1997, the sisters expanded the nail salon into Empy's Day Spa. The business has moved through five addresses over the decades, the proclamation states. It now operates at 143 West Putnam Ave.
The spa started small. In a June profile by Moffly Media, Empy Constante, one of the Jaramillo sisters and the spa's owner, said, "When we started, it was just me, my sister, my niece and one other employee. We started with nothing." The business now employs a team of 17, according to Moffly Media.
The name change came at a client's suggestion. Constante first opened under the name "Nails by Empy," but a client urged her to find something that felt more upscale, according to the Moffly Media profile. The business became Empy's Day Spa.
Constante told Moffly Media that multigenerational relationships define the business. "The best thing is having multiple generations of clients from the same families. I feel so grateful when my clients come in with their daughters or mothers. I even have one family that consists of five generations!" she said.
The town has recognized the sisters before. In 2012, the Greenwich Library Oral History Project included them as part of Greenwich's heritage. They have also been profiled in Greenwich Magazine and Greenwich Time, according to the proclamation.
Camillo's proclamation urged all residents to recognize the Jaramillo sisters and called them owners of "an iconic local business." The spa marks its 40th year at 143 West Putnam Ave.
