Sacred Heart Greenwich beat Greenwich Academy 4-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 21, improving to 12-0 on the field hockey season. The win kept the Tigers undefeated, but their shutout streak ended when GA sophomore Barrett Hanson scored the first goal Sacred Heart had allowed all year.
Junior midfielder Kingsley Ely scored twice and junior midfielder Cordelia Blanc added a goal and an assist at Magnetti Field, as Sacred Heart outshot Greenwich Academy 28-6 and earned 15 penalty corners, according to Greenwich Sports Beat.
SHG is 5-0 in FAA play. Greenwich Academy fell to 4-2 in the league.
After a scoreless first quarter, senior forward Whitney Rousseau opened the scoring with 4:39 left in the second quarter off an assist from junior midfielder Lauren Clark. Blanc, who transferred to Sacred Heart this year after three seasons at Greenwich Academy, scored off a penalty corner as time expired in the half to make it 2-0.
Ely extended the lead early in the third quarter, finishing in transition off a Clark pass. Hanson answered with 3:53 remaining in the third, knocking home a penalty corner to cut the deficit to 3-1.
That goal was the first Sacred Heart had allowed all season.
The Tigers have outscored opponents 76-1 through 12 games. "Not having anyone score against us adds a lot of pressure on the goalie and defenders," SHG coach Alex Gheorghe said. "But they scored and we congratulate Greenwich Academy for playing hard against us and I think it was good, quality game."
Ely sealed the result with 4:12 left in the fourth quarter, lifting a high shot into the cage off a pass from junior Joanna Eken.
GA senior goalie Niamah Cooney made 18 saves under heavy pressure. Greenwich Academy coach Jamie Brower pointed to her young roster, noting that most of her starters had never played in a Sacred Heart-GA varsity game before.
The two programs could meet again in the FAA Tournament. Greenwich Academy swept Sacred Heart 3-0 in 2025, winning the FAA regular-season and tournament titles and edging the Tigers in the NEPSAC Class A Tournament semifinals.
Sacred Heart hosts Cushing Academy on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Greenwich Academy hosts Loomis Chaffee on Oct. 28 and visits Westminster on Saturday, Oct. 31.
