For some Greenwich residents, the challenge isn’t finding a restaurant — it’s getting a healthy meal on the table. A new outreach effort aims to reach neighbors in Byram, Chickahominy and South Center who need help shopping for or preparing food.

Meals-on-Wheels, Inc. of Greenwich is now accepting new clients for affordable, dietitian-reviewed meal delivery with no age requirement, income limit, medical referral or long-term commitment.

The expansion comes as community leaders highlight uneven access to food resources across town. A 2025 Greenwich United Way needs assessment found that about 10% of Greenwich residents live below 185% of the federal poverty level, with financial hardship concentrated in neighborhoods including Byram, Chickahominy and South Center. South Center has the town’s highest concentration of public assistance recipients and only two SNAP-authorized food retailers, according to the report.

“Neighborhood-level data matters,” Greenwich United Way CEO David Rabin said in response to the assessment, noting the sharp differences between some Greenwich neighborhoods.

Who can use the service?

Meals-on-Wheels serves anyone who has difficulty shopping for or preparing meals, including older adults, people with health challenges, and residents who need temporary support.

The organization is also asking caregivers, neighbors, doctors, clergy and community groups to help identify people who may benefit.

Greenwich has more than 10,800 residents age 65 and older, representing about 22% of the population, according to the United Way report. Meals-on-Wheels also operates a Preschool Weekend Meal Program, providing food for children when school meals are unavailable.

What does it cost?

Lunch and dinner delivery costs $10 per day, while a single meal costs $7. Volunteers deliver meals Monday through Friday, with weekend meals included in Friday deliveries.

Menus are reviewed by a registered dietitian and include options for diabetic, low-lactose, vegetarian, chopped and pureed diets. Meals are nut-free and shellfish-free.

The organization delivers about 20,000 meals each year and partners with groups including Greenwich Country Day School, Neighbor to Neighbor, the Greenwich Department of Human Services and the Commission on Aging.
