A proposed bike and walking trail that would have connected Old Greenwich to Stamford is no longer moving forward after residents raised concerns during the planning process.
The Town of Greenwich announced in July that it will stop design work on the Greenwich-Stamford Multi-Use Path, which was planned to link Binney Park in Old Greenwich with Boccuzzi Park in Stamford.
Officials cited public feedback as the reason for ending the project, though the town did not specify the concerns raised.
The town will redirect remaining grant funds toward field surveys along two nearby road corridors:
- Shore Road from Tomac Avenue to the Greenwich-Stamford border
- Forest Avenue from Sound Beach Avenue to Tomac Avenue
The surveys will help guide future pedestrian and bicycle improvements. The town has not said how much of the original $338,000 planning budget remains available.
The proposed trail was intended to create a safer route for walking and biking while connecting parks, schools, business districts and train stations between Greenwich and Stamford.
The two towns received a $270,000 state grant through the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Recreational Trails Program, covering 80% of the planning costs. Construction funding was never secured.
Engineering firm Tighe & Bond developed four possible routes, with estimated construction costs ranging from $4.4 million to $5.3 million.
The town held a public meeting in November 2025 and accepted online feedback through the end of the year before deciding not to continue the trail design.
DPW project manager Michael Kiselak will oversee the field surveys. No timeline has been announced for when the studies will be completed or released.
Residents with questions can contact Kiselak at 203-622-3839 or through the town’s project page.
