Jackie Moy started Greenwich Mahjong Club to bridge two worlds she knows well. Born in Hong Kong and a longtime Greenwich resident, Moy teaches both American and Chinese Mahjong at the Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center in Cos Cob. This fall, she's expanding.

The club's new Fast Track Chinese Mahjong course begins Monday, Sept. 14, and meets Sept. 18, 21 and 25, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. Registration is $300 per person through greenwichmahjongclub.com. The four-session course is aimed at complete beginners and players curious about the game's roots, according to Greenwich Free Press.

Moy uses fundamental concepts from Chinese Mahjong to help students grasp American Mahjong more quickly, according to the club's website. The tagline on the site captures her approach: "East Meets West, One Tile at a Time."

The Fast Track course joins two other September offerings already open for registration. The club's American Mahjong 101 series runs five Wednesdays starting Sept. 2 at $325, and the Greenwich Mahjong Fall League runs five Tuesdays starting Sept. 1 at $260. Both meet 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Civic Center.

The Fall League is a social league with both Chinese and American Mahjong tables, light refreshments and prizes. Weather permitting, sessions move outdoors to the Civic Center's patio or lawn. The fifth week is Championship Night, when players compete within their division for final standings.

Greenwich resident Grace Gong, a student of Moy's, wrote in a testimonial on the club's website that Moy's "cultural storytelling style" and step-by-step format make learning Chinese Mahjong easy and fun.

Since the Civic Center reopened, it has served as the club's home base. But Moy has expanded well beyond one location. Greenwich Mahjong Club hosts pop-up gatherings at Athena Books in Old Greenwich and Stamford Diner, offers seasonal lessons at Greenwich Library and Cos Cob Library, and runs programs at private clubs including Belle Haven Club. The club also participates in Greenwich Adult & Continuing Education.

The club launched Greenwich's first structured Mahjong League in January, according to prior Greenwich Free Press coverage. A Fall Festival at the Cohen Eastern Greenwich Civic Center will let players try both American and Chinese Mahjong styles, though a specific date has not yet been announced.
