Greenwich families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or dementia have a new place to gather, eat lunch, and feel less isolated.

The YMCA of Greenwich has launched Memory Café, a free monthly program for people living with Alzheimer's disease, mild cognitive impairment, dementia, or other memory-related challenges. Caregivers and family members are welcome, too. No YMCA membership is required.

The next session is Thursday, July 30, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the YMCA, 50 East Putnam Ave.

Each gathering includes music, group activities, conversation, and a sit-down lunch. The YMCA described the program on its official Instagram account on July 12 as a space for people experiencing dementia, Alzheimer's, or other memory changes, along with their caregivers, noting the first luncheon had already taken place.

The café meets on the last Thursday of each month. It is listed on the YMCA of Greenwich website under Adult Enrichment programs.

Who it's for

The program is open to anyone experiencing memory loss, not only those with a formal diagnosis. Seniors looking to stay socially active and connected are also encouraged to attend, according to Laurie Canning Pensiero, a community member who posted about the program on Instagram on July 28 after attending a related Memory Café session in Norwalk.

@emtmom65: "Whether you're living with memory changes, caring for someone who is, or you're a senior looking to stay active, engaged, and connected, we'd love to welcome you."

How to sign up

The program is free. Residents can register through the YMCA of Greenwich website at greenwichymca.org under "Register for Events at the Y."
