Western Middle School has a new principal, Central Middle School has a new assistant principal, and the ripple effects have reached across district lines.

Greenwich Public Schools named Matthew Laskowski principal of Western Middle School effective July 1, Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones announced June 29. Laskowski had served as associate superintendent in Stamford Public Schools since 2024, overseeing five middle schools and two K-8 schools. He replaces Suzanne Coyne, who left GPS "for a different home-work balance," according to the district announcement.

Laskowski's departure from Stamford triggered a chain reaction. He had been appointed Stamford's assistant superintendent for secondary schools on June 23 but chose the Greenwich principalship instead. On July 15, the Stamford Board of Education voted unanimously to appoint Scott Clayton to fill the vacancy Laskowski left behind, Greenwich Time reported. Clayton, who had served as Stamford's director of student data and systems since 2024 and previously led Scofield Magnet Middle School for 12 years, now oversees Stamford's middle schools, high schools, and adult education programs.

Back in Greenwich, the moves kept coming. Scott Trungadi, Central Middle School's assistant principal for 11 years, was named the district's educational data and systems program coordinator effective July 13, Dr. Jones announced July 8. That opened the assistant principal seat at Central, which went to Shawn Hoyt, Greenwich High School's science program administrator since 2023.

Dr. Jones praised Hoyt's track record in a July 8 announcement, noting he had led Greenwich High to its highest Next Generation Science Standards results and stepped in as interim assistant principal at Western Middle School to fill a colleague's leave vacancy during the 2025-26 school year.

"Working alongside the students, families, and staff of Central Middle School will be very professionally fulfilling because middle school is such an important stage in student growth," Hoyt said in the district's announcement.

Hoyt has been with GPS since 2016.

The reshuffling affects all three Greenwich middle schools heading into the 2026-27 school year. GPS serves more than 8,600 students across 15 schools, according to district figures. The Board of Education, chaired by Dr. Michael-Joseph Mercanti-Anthony, held its final meeting of the 2025-26 school year on June 11.
