Severe thunderstorms swept through the Greenwich area Saturday evening, July 18, with forecasters warning of wind gusts up to 70 mph along the Interstate 95 corridor. As of Sunday morning, July 19, no Greenwich-specific damage count, road closure list, or power outage figure had been released by town officials or Eversource.
Statewide, Eversource reported 758 customers without power just before 7 a.m. Sunday. Neighboring Norwalk had 96 outages as of 9:50 p.m. Saturday. The largest concentrations were in Avon (313) and Haddam (131).
Greenwich Emergency Management had issued guidance ahead of the storm, urging residents to charge phones and devices, clear storm drains and gutters, maintain multiple ways to receive weather alerts, avoid driving through flooded roads, and stay away from downed trees and power lines.
The Storm Prediction Center placed all of Connecticut under a slight risk (level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms Saturday, with damaging straight-line winds as the primary threat. Forecasters predicted rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour, raising the possibility of localized flash flooding.
Eversource spokeswoman Tricia Taskey Modifica said Saturday that crews had been mobilized and staged across the state ahead of the storms for rapid response to outages and downed lines.
Connecticut municipalities were already recovering from severe storms earlier in July when Saturday's system arrived, compounding the risk of weakened trees falling onto power lines.
Greenwich Emergency Management and Eversource have not yet issued a post-storm assessment for the town. Residents should monitor GreenwichAlerts.org for updates on road closures and restoration timelines.
