The Greenwich Police Department announced the death of retired Capt. Donald E. Merchant, a lifelong Greenwich resident who served the department for 30 years before retiring in 1999. He was 84.

A career built entirely in one town.

Merchant began his GPD career in August 1969, after serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1964. Over three decades, he climbed steadily through the ranks — patrol officer, juvenile officer in 1977, sergeant in 1980, lieutenant in 1982, and captain in 1986 — a career that never took him away from the town he called home his entire life.

A mark of distinction along the way.

In 1993, Merchant graduated from the FBI National Academy at Quantico, a highly selective 10-week program for senior law enforcement leaders, nominated by their own agency heads and affiliated with the University of Virginia. It's the kind of credential reserved for a department's most trusted leaders.

How his colleagues remember him.

The department said Merchant received numerous letters of appreciation throughout his career recognizing his compassion and willingness to help others, describing him in its announcement as "widely respected by his colleagues and the community he served."

A loss that lands at a meaningful moment.

Merchant's death comes as the department marks its 130th anniversary — a milestone that spans roughly the 73rd through 103rd years of the force's history during his own career. Speaking about the upcoming anniversary Policeman's Ball, Police Chief Jim Heavey called the occasion "extraordinary," saying it's "about honoring the generations of officers who have served Greenwich with integrity and professionalism" — words that could just as easily describe Merchant's own three decades of service.
