Putnam Restaurant reopens after building safety closure

Putnam Restaurant, the Nikas family's diner at 373 Greenwich Avenue, reopened Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 a.m. after a mid-August closure forced by a town safety order.

The Department of Public Works' Building Inspection Division declared the building dangerous and unsafe in mid-August, Greenwich Free Press first reported. The specific defects that prompted the order have not been disclosed.

Chef Javier Sanchez told Greenwich Free Press the safety issues have been fixed and the team is eager to welcome diners back. The closure was a rare interruption for a restaurant that stays open 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. The family has run the diner for more than 30 years, according to the restaurant's website.

Opening-day hours Wednesday are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Takeout orders can be placed at (203) 869-4683.
