A 13-week-old Cane Corso puppy was found badly injured on I-95 Northbound near the Exit 4 off-ramp in Cos Cob on Sunday, July 26, and Greenwich Animal Control is asking the public to help identify the dog's owner.
The puppy was discovered at approximately 8:30 p.m. with a fractured humerus and several open wounds on his legs. Animal Control Officer Suzanne Ondreicka classified the case as animal cruelty and neglect.
"He is a sweet innocent puppy that has endured horrific trauma, and we are hopeful for his recovery," Ondreicka said, according to Greenwich Free Press.
How the puppy reached the highway remains unknown.
The Greenwich Free Press report described this as another cruelty and neglect case for the department, though details of prior cases were not provided.
Under Connecticut General Statutes § 53-247, a first offense of animal cruelty or neglect is a Class A misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. A subsequent offense rises to a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. State law also imposes a mandatory five-year ban on animal ownership upon conviction for core cruelty offenses.
