Greenwich residents will hear from candidates in four state legislative races and one congressional contest at two League of Women Voters debates in October.
The first event is Wednesday, Oct. 14, at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Ave., Old Greenwich. The League of Women Voters of Greenwich (LWV Greenwich) will host a 36th District State Senate debate from 7 to 7:45 p.m., followed by a State House debate covering Districts 149, 150 and 151 from 8 to 9 p.m., according to the LWV Greenwich event page.
The Senate matchup pits Democrat Jill Oberlander against Republican Joe Kelly. In the House races, 149th District voters will see Democrat Amiel Goldberg face Republican incumbent Tina Courpas. The 150th District debate features Democratic incumbent Steve Meskers against Republican Jonathan Charles Goldstein. In the 151st District, Democratic incumbent Hector Arzeno faces Republican Michael S. Mason.
Anthony Presta, a social studies teacher and mock trial coach at Wilton High School, will moderate.
Greenwich Community Television (GCTV) will livestream the event on Optimum channel 79, Verizon/FIOS channel 24 and GCTV's YouTube channel. In-person attendance requires registration through the LWV Greenwich website.
Five days later, on Monday, Oct. 19, a coalition of 12 Lower Fairfield County LWV chapters will host a debate for Connecticut's 4th Congressional District at the Westport Library, Greenwich Free Press reported. The debate runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Three candidates will appear: Rep. Jim Himes, the Democrat who has held the seat since 2008; Republican Michael Ted Goldstein, a Greenwich ophthalmologist and attorney who won the 2026 GOP primary; and independent candidate Benjamin Wesley. Goldstein previously challenged Himes in 2020, 2022 and 2024, Greenwich Time reported. The district covers 17 towns in southwest Connecticut.
Kay Maxwell, a former Connecticut and national LWV president, will moderate the Oct. 19 debate. Attendance is free but requires advance registration. The deadline to submit audience questions is Monday, Oct. 12.
The event will also be livestreamed on the Westport Library's YouTube channel.
Joan Hogan Gillman, president of the League of Women Voters, said in a statement that the organization values the debates as a civic tool. "We are delighted to partner with other Lower Fairfield County chapters to host this debate and welcome residents from all towns within Connecticut's 4th Congressional district to attend," Gillman said.
The debates come ahead of the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election. Early voting at Greenwich Town Hall, 101 Field Point Road, runs from Oct. 19 through Nov. 1, with polls open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. most days and extended hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 and Thursday, Oct. 29, according to the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee.
