Greenwich is looking for 25 volunteers to clean up Great Captain Island, a 17.2-acre town-owned island in Long Island Sound.

The Greenwich Conservation Commission and Conservation Department will host their annual Great Captain Island Clean-Up on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event marks International Coastal Cleanup Month. Volunteers will meet at the Grass Island Boat Launch Ramp and ride out to the island aboard a Parks and Recreation Marine Facilities boat, according to a town announcement. The island is accessible only by boat.

Registration is required through SignUpGenius, and participants must list the number of people in their party. Only 25 spots are available.

If weather forces a postponement, the rain date is Sunday, Sept. 27, at the same times.

What to bring

The commission said participants should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and pack sunscreen, bug spray and a reusable water bottle. Trash bags and disposable rubber gloves will be provided, though volunteers may bring their own cleanup gear.

The island

Great Captain Island sits off the Greenwich coast and is owned by the Town of Greenwich. Its historic lighthouse dates to 1868. The island also houses a 911 memorial, a bird sanctuary and a beach with picnic areas.

The cleanup is a recurring tradition. The Greenwich Sentinel reported a similar Conservation Commission cleanup at the island in September 2019.
