Three Greenwich police officers rescued a small owl found injured in the roadway near the 270 block of West Putnam Avenue on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

Concerned residents spotted the bird and flagged down Officer Huestis, who blocked traffic to protect it, according to a Greenwich Police Department Facebook post. MPO Izzo then secured the owl while Officer Shaw helped place it in a box for transport.

The rescue was captured on video posted to the department's Facebook page, showing the officers working near the 270 block.

The owl was taken to Wildlife in Crisis in Weston, police told Patch. The nonprofit rehabilitation center has cared for more than 100,000 animals since it began operating in 1988, according to its website. It treats more than 200 species of native birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

The owl's condition was not clear as of Tuesday afternoon, Patch reported. The species was not identified. Police described it only as "a small owl."

The department thanked the residents who flagged down the officer, adding that helping the town's wildlife is part of the job.

Residents who find injured or orphaned wildlife can call Wildlife in Crisis at 203-544-9913. The center, at 44 Indian Valley Road in Weston, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
