Greenwich Hospital has earned the highest stroke care recognition from the American Heart Association, confirming that the 206-bed community hospital met rigorous national treatment standards for at least two consecutive years.
The hospital received the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus award with a Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll designation, Yale New Haven Health announced Friday, July 18. Greenwich Hospital also earned a Resuscitation Bronze recognition for its treatment of patients who experience cardiac arrest while already hospitalized.
Gold Plus is the top tier in the AHA's stroke recognition program. To qualify, a hospital must demonstrate 85% or higher adherence on all applicable stroke care achievement measures and 75% or higher on additional quality measures for two or more consecutive calendar years, according to the AHA's published criteria. The program's standard reporting period covers two calendar years of performance data ending in December 2025.
The separate Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll requires at least 75% compliance on a diabetes cardiovascular initiative composite score for 12 consecutive months, per AHA criteria.
"This recognition reflects the continued dedication, coordination and clinical excellence of our stroke teams across Yale New Haven Health," said Joseph Schindler, MD, director of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at Yale New Haven Hospital and professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine.
Schindler's comments addressed the broader Yale New Haven Health system. Bridgeport Hospital, Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Yale New Haven Hospital, and Westerly Hospital also received stroke or resuscitation honors as part of the same announcement.

Stroke is the No. 4 cause of death in the United States, killing someone approximately every three minutes on average in 2023, according to the AHA's 2026 statistics update. For Greenwich residents, the Gold Plus designation signals that their closest hospital consistently follows evidence-based protocols for rapid stroke treatment, which directly affects survival rates and long-term disability outcomes.
Greenwich Hospital, a member of Yale New Haven Health and academic affiliate of Yale School of Medicine, serves lower Fairfield County and Westchester County, New York. It has operated since 1903.
