The inaugural HSS Greenwich Half Marathon will not run Sept. 27 as planned. Organizers and town officials postponed the race to Sunday, Oct. 18, after concluding that the nor'easter bearing down on the coast made conditions too dangerous for runners, volunteers and spectators.
The Greenwich Road Runners and town officials met Friday, Sept. 25, with the Department of Parks and Recreation and emergency management staff. After that meeting, the Town of Greenwich announced the postponement on X, tagging First Selectman Fred Camillo.
On the race's official webpage, organizers said they agonized over the decision but that forecasted high winds and tides left little choice. Town officials were concerned about coastal flooding, power outages, downed trees and power lines, the statement said.
The concern proved warranted. Greenwich police issued an alert warning of 3 to 5 inches of rainfall and northeast wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph, with isolated gusts up to 60 mph. A Coastal Flood Warning remained in effect through Sunday afternoon. By Saturday, Sept. 26, Parks staff closed the gates at Tod's Point at 11 a.m. as waves crashed above the stone wall by the pavilion, Greenwich Free Press reported.
In his Sept. 25 newsletter, published before the final call was made, Camillo wrote that he wanted to give the race every chance to happen. "If it is deemed too dangerous, public safety will be paramount, as always," he said.
The 13.1-mile course loops through Greenwich Point Park and the Old Greenwich business district. Race organizers estimated 800 to 1,000 runners would participate, with proceeds exceeding $20,000 benefiting Cos Cob-based nonprofit Kids in Crisis, according to Patch.
All registered runners' entries move automatically to the Oct. 18 date. Runners who cannot make the new date can defer to the 2027 race by emailing [email protected].
Oct. 18 race day schedule at Greenwich Point Park, 11 Tods Driftway, Old Greenwich:
- 6:30 a.m. — Packet pickup and registration
- 7:30 a.m. — Half marathon start
- 8:15–10:30 a.m. — Post-race snacks and refreshments
- 9:45 a.m. — Awards ceremony
