Greenwich High shut out Fairfield Warde 17-0 on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Cardinal Stadium.

The win pushed head coach Anthony Morello's Cardinals to 3-0 and gave the defense its second shutout in three games, Greenwich Sports Beat reported. The two-time defending CIAC Class LL (large school) champion has outscored opponents 94-7 through three weeks. Greenwich entered the game ranked No. 2 in the GametimeCT poll, behind only New Canaan, according to the CT Post.

Senior running back and captain Justin Carroll scored first on a 4-yard run with 4:53 left in the opening quarter. Junior placekicker Michael Galano converted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Warde answered with a long drive to the Greenwich 1-yard line, but the Cardinals' defense held on fourth-and-goal. Quarterback Luke Mancuso was stopped short on a gang tackle.

The score held at 7-0 until the third quarter. Senior captain Colin Suvansri blocked a Warde punt, giving Greenwich the ball at the Mustangs' 44. Junior quarterback Phil Tarantino hit junior wide receiver Max Townsend for a 44-yard touchdown. Galano's PAT made it 14-0 with 5:39 left in the third.

Galano added a 25-yard field goal with 9:50 remaining in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

Tarantino finished with 72 passing yards and 56 rushing yards on eight carries. Sophomore Evan Beilenson led the ground game with 46 yards on 13 carries. Carroll added 42 yards on eight rushes. Greenwich totaled 229 yards to Warde's 193.

On defense, Alexander Nietzell led the team with seven tackles. Suvansri had two tackles and four assists. Joshua Alexandre recorded three tackles, one for a loss, and two assists.

Warde fell to 1-2. Mancuso completed 15 of 23 passes for 79 yards.

Greenwich hosts non-conference opponent Newtown (1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. The Nighthawks, coached by Dan Farina, lost to Pomperaug 24-7 on Friday, Sept. 25, according to MaxPreps.
