Indian Rock Lane near Central Middle School will stay closed through Oct. 30 for sewer line work. The Greenwich Board of Selectmen approved the closure extension after construction crews hit rock underground that delayed the project.

Peter Alfano, the Turner Construction manager overseeing site work at the school, told selectmen that crews began installing and relocating sewer lines during the summer but struck rock on Indian Rock Lane. The discovery pushed the timeline past the start of school on Aug. 28.

"There really is no other option than to hammer that rock down to get to where we need to be to install that sewer line," Alfano said at the board meeting, according to Patch.

Blasting was ruled out because of the proximity to neighboring homes.

Work takes place between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on weekdays. Residents on Indian Rock Lane, Ponderosa Drive and Stanwich Road will keep access to their properties and driveways during those hours. Detour signs will route traffic between Stanwich Road and Orchard Street throughout the work schedule.

First Selectman Fred Camillo acknowledged the disruption in his weekly newsletter, writing that the town recognizes the inconvenience and is working with Turner Construction to limit the impact but that the sewer work must be completed, Patch reported Thursday, Sept. 3.

Students returned to the new Central Middle School for the 2026–27 school year on Aug. 28. The 125,000-square-foot, two-story building cost $112 million, with the state providing a $22 million reimbursement toward the project.

No official Town of Greenwich press release or meeting minutes confirming the closure extension have been published as of Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Once Indian Rock Lane reopens Oct. 30, a separate closure on a small portion of Stanwich Road is planned from Nov. 2 through Dec. 11. Alfano said he will return to the selectmen with that request at a later date.
