Greenwich residents dealing with higher property tax bills will have their first opportunity to face the full Board of Estimate and Taxation on Monday, July 20, when the 12-member board meets at Town Hall.

The meeting runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Room 105, first floor, 101 Field Point Road.

Why this meeting matters

Monday's session is the BET's first regular meeting since the approximately $542.3 million FY2027 budget took effect Tuesday, July 1. The Representative Town Meeting approved that spending plan on Friday, May 15, in a vote that cleared the budget's final legislative hurdle, according to the Greenwich Sentinel.

Since then, tax bills have landed. Homeowners are seeing an average 8% property tax increase for FY2027, with some facing hikes as high as 15%, according to figures cited by the Greenwich Republicans on their website in a July 8 commentary. BET Chair David Weisbrod, a Democrat, has attributed the increase to the state-mandated property revaluation coinciding with the new budget, according to the same source.

The town's mill rate is 10.125%.

No agenda posted yet

The detailed agenda for Monday's meeting had not been posted to the town's Agenda Center as of Thursday, July 17. Without it, the specific items the board will take up remain unclear.

The meeting follows a busy July for BET committees. The board's Budget, Law, Debt and Fund Balance Policy, Audit, HR, and IAC and OPEB committees all held sessions during the first three weeks of the month, according to the town calendar. The HR Committee held a special meeting on Wednesday, July 15. Reports from those sessions could surface Monday, though that has not been confirmed.

Capital spending context

The FY2027 budget includes capital spending that roughly doubled to over $90 million, with $148 million planned for FY2028 and $135 million for FY2029, according to the Greenwich Republicans. These figures have not been independently verified against official BET capital plan documents.

The meeting is open to the public at Town Hall, Room 105. The BET's IAC and OPEB Committee is also scheduled to meet Monday, July 20, the same day.
