Glenville is about a month away from getting its grocery store back.

First Selectman Fred Camillo told the Board of Selectmen on Thursday, Aug. 13 that DeCicco & Sons has secured all necessary permits for its new store at 21 Glenville St. and expects to open by mid-September. The New York-based chain's Greenwich location will be its first in Connecticut, filling a space that has sat empty since Stop & Shop closed there in June 2023.

The news came just days after a DeCicco & Sons spokesperson told Patch on Aug. 10 that the store was still awaiting final approvals and that an exact opening date was unknown. By the time Camillo addressed the board three days later, both outstanding issues had been resolved.

What caused the delay

The Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a final site plan and special permit for DeCicco & Sons in October 2024, allowing the chain to renovate the former Stop & Shop building. But two problems pushed the timeline well past what residents expected.

One permit was tied to the property owner, Camillo said. A separate issue involved a retaining wall at the back of the building. He did not elaborate on the specifics but said both have been resolved. The property owner has not been publicly identified.

"It's probably another month out, but it's coming. We promise you it will open up," Camillo said at the Aug. 13 meeting, adding that he has been in contact with DeCicco leadership daily.

Hiring already underway

DeCicco & Sons has been holding job fairs at the 21 Glenville St. site throughout the summer. In May 2026, the company hosted open hiring events every Wednesday and Friday, running 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Patch. As of mid-August, the company was still posting positions for the Greenwich location, including a porter role.

What it means for Glenville

The neighborhood has been without a full-service grocery store for more than three years. DeCicco & Sons, founded in 1973 in the Bronx, now operates 11 stores across Westchester County, including locations in Armonk, Harrison and Larchmont.

A confirmed opening date has not been announced. Based on Camillo's Aug. 13 estimate, the store could open in mid-to-late September.
