Greenwich High's defending champion girls volleyball team routed Brien McMahon 25-4, 25-14, 25-13 on Sept. 10 to move to 2-0 on the young season.

The Cardinals haven't dropped a set.

Coach Marianna Linnehan's squad opened the 2026 campaign with a 3-0 win over non-conference Southington on Sept. 8, then rolled through McMahon in FCIAC play two days later. Greenwich went 25-1 last season, winning both the CIAC Class LL state championship and the FCIAC Tournament title for the program's fourth crown in each.

Freshman Beatriz Lisboa da Cunha de Freitas made an immediate mark in her early varsity action against McMahon, finishing with four kills, 12 assists, four digs and seven service points. Senior captain Victoria Sullivan added 15 assists, seven digs and seven service points.

Junior Bailee Dayon anchored the back row with 25 digs, five assists and three service points. Senior Zeeyah Jacobsen contributed four kills, eight service points and one block, according to the Greenwich Sentinel.

The roster features seven seniors, five juniors and two freshmen this fall. Several returning players earned postseason honors after the 2025 championship run: senior Heidi Zieme was named CIAC Class LL Tournament MVP and earned All-FCIAC First Team, senior Kayah Armstrong was named FCIAC Tournament MVP and also made All-FCIAC First Team, Sullivan earned All-FCIAC Second Team and Dayon received All-FCIAC Third Team recognition, Greenwich Sports Beat reported Sept. 19.

"Of course, we would love to repeat it. We want to be FCIAC champs and state champs," Sullivan said in a Sept. 19 Greenwich Sports Beat report after the team's win over Fairfield Warde.

Greenwich extended its record to 4-0 through Sept. 18, sweeping Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Warde after the McMahon match. The Cardinals were scheduled to host FCIAC rival Ridgefield on Sept. 23 and travel to non-conference Joel Barlow on Sept. 25.
