Greenwich High School's two-time defending Class LL football champions will open the 2026 season at home on Thursday, Sept. 10, hosting Bridgeport Central at Cardinal Stadium with a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
The Cardinals went 11-2 last fall and capped the year by dismantling Southington 45-6 in the Class LL final on Dec. 13, claiming their second straight title and third in four years. Head coach John Marinelli, entering his 12th season, now steers a program that CT Insider calls the standard-bearer in Connecticut's largest football division.
That football dominance is part of a broader athletic surge. Greenwich finished No. 4 nationally in the 2025-26 MaxPreps Cup standings, the highest finish ever by a Connecticut school, totaling 2,308 points across 11 CIAC championships and four runner-up finishes during the school year.
The schedule matches the ambition.
Greenwich's 2026 opponents posted a combined 73-39 record (.652) in 2025, and six reached the CIAC playoffs, including a champion and three semifinalists, according to CT Insider's schedule analysis. Both teams that beat Greenwich last season return on the slate: New Canaan, which won 14-7, visits Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 23; Wilton, which edged the Cardinals 7-3, comes to town Friday, Nov. 6.
The back half stacks five straight playoff opponents beginning with New Canaan, then Ridgefield, Wilton, St. Joseph and Staples on Thanksgiving.
The opener against Bridgeport Central should provide a gentler on-ramp. The Hilltoppers went 1-9 in first-year coach Ryan Ayers' debut season, snapping a 61-game losing streak with a Week 1 win over Wilbur Cross before dropping the final nine. Ayers returns senior receiver William Bramwell, who averaged 67.7 receiving yards per game, and junior quarterback Joel McCulley.
Greenwich's Alliance games are at New Britain on Friday, Sept. 18, and home against Newtown on Saturday, Oct. 3. The full gauntlet begins Oct. 23 when New Canaan's Lou Marinelli, one win shy of 400 career victories with the Rams, brings his squad across town.
