Greenwich faces a Level 2 flash flood risk Monday, Aug. 3, as a storm system pushes heavy rain and thunderstorms along the I-95 corridor, a day after 686 power outages hit town Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center has identified the flash flood risk at Level 2 of 4 for the region, with rainfall rates that could reach 2 to 3 inches per hour in the heaviest storms, according to Daily Voice. General totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with localized amounts of 4 to 5 inches possible.

Flash flood warnings were issued Monday morning for north-central Fairfield County, in effect until 7:45 a.m., according to Greenwich Time. A flood watch remains in effect for all of Fairfield County, which includes Greenwich, and New Haven County. Radar had already recorded between 1 and 2 inches of rainfall over north-central Fairfield County by Monday morning, with an additional 1 to 2 inches possible.

Showers with embedded thunderstorms are expected to persist into late Monday afternoon and evening before clearing.

"With some of this rain falling over a short amount of time in heavy thunderstorms, there can be quick flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas, as well as streets and highways and creeks and streams," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bill Deger said Sunday, Aug. 2.

686 outages hit Sunday

The storm system arrived on the heels of unexplained power outages that left hundreds of Greenwich customers in the dark early Sunday, Aug. 2. Eversource reported exactly 686 outages in town at 7 a.m. that morning, more than any other Connecticut municipality at that time, according to the Stamford Advocate. Wilton had the second-highest count with just 46.

Nearly all Greenwich outages were restored before 11 a.m. Sunday. The cause remains unknown.

This is the second significant storm system to affect Greenwich in roughly two weeks. The town faced a separate flood watch event the week of July 28.

By Tuesday, Aug. 4, high pressure is expected to take over, bringing dry weather.
