Lauren Stephens and Kaki McGrath are marking 10 years since they launched Dudley Stephens, the fleece brand headquartered on West Putnam Avenue in Greenwich.

The sisters co-founded the company in 2015 after their mother, Bonnie Dudley, posed a question that became the brand's origin story: "Wouldn't it be nice if we had something warm to wear on the boat that we'd also want to wear into a restaurant?" That idea grew into a line of elevated fleece pullovers now sold to customers across the country, according to a Moffly Media profile published Sept. 8.

The brand has sold more than 492,000 pieces to over 122,000 customers, with its strongest markets in suburban communities around Boston, Chicago, Atlanta and Dallas, according to a separate Moffly Media feature. The average customer has placed five orders.

Stephens, who lives in Greenwich, spent a decade in New York City doing celebrity public relations for luxury houses including Gucci and Calvin Klein before starting the company. McGrath, a Darien resident, came from a marketing career focused on events. Both grew up in Darien near the New Canaan border.

In the early days, orders were packed in Stephens' basement and website edits happened in parked cars outside Starbucks while babies napped in the backseat.

Bonnie Dudley remains involved in the operation, participating in fabric selection, fit sessions and seasonal launches. She Zooms into fittings from Florida.

"It's become her second act," Stephens told Moffly Media. "My dad retired, and she's still coming into the office."

The sisters' father, a former sports marketing executive, advises on financial and strategic decisions. The company's LinkedIn page lists between two and 10 employees.

The brand has emphasized sustainability since its founding. Its website states its garments have repurposed 9.6 million plastic bottles. The company also runs a DS Renew program that recycles nearly 1,000 used pieces each year, according to Moffly Media.

Stephens and McGrath now host a podcast called "Two Sisters in Business," covering entrepreneurship and motherhood. Stephens told Moffly Media the brand's storytelling has evolved even as its core message has stayed the same.

New fall collections and collaborations with artists and fellow female-founded brands are in development, though no launch dates have been announced. The brand operates from its Greenwich headquarters at 6 West Putnam Ave., Suite 201, a space known internally as The Townhouse.
