Cos Cob's post office at 152 East Putnam Ave. is expected to reopen after more than seven weeks of closure for building repairs.

State Rep. Steve Meskers, a Democrat representing District 150, wrote to constituents the week of Sept. 22 with the update. Meskers said his office contacted U.S. Rep. Jim Himes' office, which then reached out to USPS officials on the community's behalf.

"We are very pleased to share the good news that we have been informed that the Cos Cob Post Office is expected to reopen very soon," Meskers wrote in the letter, first reported by Greenwich Free Press.

Meskers also thanked Himes and his staff for what he called their prompt attention in helping address the concern for the Cos Cob community.

The branch shut its doors Aug. 7 after the U.S. Postal Service cited necessary building repairs, according to a USPS news release. Greenwich Free Press described the issue as environmental concerns, though USPS did not use that term in its official announcement. Signs were posted at the building and at the loading dock behind it.

At the time of the closure, USPS said it planned to have the branch reopened and fully operational as soon as possible and apologized for the inconvenience to customers.

The closure forced Cos Cob residents to travel to two alternate locations for seven weeks. USPS moved retail and P.O. box operations to the Downtown Greenwich Post Office at 44 Amogerone Crossway. Retail services were also available at the Greenwich Post Office at 29 Valley Drive.

No specific reopening date has been announced.

Meskers' letter did not include a direct statement from Himes' office. The letter described the reopening only as expected "very soon," without naming a target date.

Until the Cos Cob branch reopens, residents can use the Downtown Greenwich location at 44 Amogerone Crossway, open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Valley Drive location accepts drop shipments Monday through Saturday, 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.
