Senior captain Joseph Carroll scored three goals as Greenwich High boys soccer shut out Fairfield Ludlowe 5-0 on Monday, Sept. 14 at Cardinal Stadium.

The hat trick powered the Cardinals' second consecutive 5-0 shutout to open the season, following a road win over Brien McMahon on Sept. 9. Through two games, Greenwich had outscored opponents 10-0.

Carroll scored in the fourth minute, then added two more after halftime as Greenwich put four second-half goals past the Falcons. Fellow captain Luca Ferrario converted a penalty kick in the 76th minute, and an own goal in the final minutes completed the scoring.

Ferrario had recorded his own hat trick in the opener against Brien McMahon. Captain Diego Cordero assisted Carroll's first goal, and senior striker Ebrima Touray set up the second with a cross that head coach Kurt Putnam called the turning point of the match, the Greenwich Sentinel reported.

Goalkeeper Oliver Almeida, the fourth senior captain, made two first-half saves. Seniors Teo Hillgruber Pita and Raphael Rizzo, along with junior Ryan Stanton, led the defensive effort. Putnam switched to a three-back formation this season after graduation claimed 25 players from last year's squad.

The Sept. 14 win marked Putnam's 497th game as Greenwich's head coach. His career record stands at 340-103-54. Three more games will bring him to the 500-game milestone.

Greenwich entered the season ranked No. 2 in the CIAC Class LL/L preseason coaches poll, according to GameTimeCT, behind defending champion Staples. The Cardinals went 20-2 in 2025, with both losses coming against Staples in the FCIAC and CIAC Class LL finals.

Since the Ludlowe game, MaxPreps shows Greenwich has added two 1-0 wins, pushing the Cardinals to 4-0 and Putnam to within one victory of his 500th career game.
