Greenwich police arrested a Byram man on five charges after he allegedly struck a woman in the face while a juvenile was present in a vehicle on Richland Road.

Steven David Mojica, 27, was arrested Oct. 11 after officers responded to a report of an altercation inside a vehicle on the west side of town, Greenwich Free Press reported. Police said Mojica initiated a verbal argument with a woman near Richland Road in Byram that escalated to physical violence.

Mojica allegedly struck the woman in the face, according to police. A juvenile witnessed the assault.

Police said Mojica then took the woman's phone and hung it up as she tried to call for help.

He was charged with assault in the third degree, risk of injury to a child, interfering with an emergency call, interfering with an officer/resisting and breach of peace in the second degree.

Mojica could not post his $25,000 bond. His court date was scheduled for Oct. 13 at Stamford Superior Court. The outcome of that appearance was not available as of publication.

First Selectman Fred Camillo proclaimed October 2026 as Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Domestic violence is the most reported violent crime in Greenwich, according to the proclamation, which noted that the YWCA Greenwich Domestic Abuse Services responded to more than 3,600 hotline calls last year.

The Greenwich Police Department handles roughly 200 domestic violence calls each year. Sgt. Ryan Carino, the department's domestic violence coordinator, said "helping the victim is our ultimate goal" during an Oct. 14 Citizens Police Academy session, as the Greenwich Sentinel reported.

Anyone experiencing domestic violence can reach the YWCA Greenwich Harmony Project's 24/7 hotline at (203) 622-0003.
