For Greenwich families stretching tight budgets before the Aug. 28 first day of school, a $50 gift card can mean the difference between worn-out sneakers and a pair of shoes that actually fits.
The Greenwich Department of Human Services Fund is distributing $50 DSW gift cards in August to income-eligible children ages 5 to 15 through its annual Boots & Shoes Program. Last year, the program put new shoes on 185 local kids, according to Greenwich Free Press. The nonprofit hopes to reach even more in 2026.
Donations still make that possible.
"A new pair of shoes may seem like a small thing, but for a child, it can make a world of difference," said Blaise Punturo, president of the GDHS Fund, a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) that receives no government funding.
The application window for families closed July 31. Approved families will receive their gift cards in August, giving children time to shop before Greenwich Public Schools opens on Friday, Aug. 28.
How to donate
The program runs entirely on charitable contributions, and donations are still being accepted. A single $50 gift covers one child's shoes. Residents can give three ways:

- Amazon Wish List, where donors can purchase DSW gift cards directly
- By mail, with a check payable to "GDHS Fund" sent to: Attn: Boots & Shoes, Department of Human Services, 101 Field Point Road, Greenwich, CT 06830
